Answer

What is a "DSS"?

DSS stands for "Digital Signage Server". This is the server licensing structure that tells a server "How many max player endpoints I can support". So for example, a DSS-15 server can support up to 15 player connections. Typically at the time of a server purchase you can find out what server DSS level its running is.

In other words, think of the "DSS" as being the size of a jar. You can only fit so many player endpoints in this jar before you eventually have to upgrade to a larger "jar".
If you need help finding out what DSS you're running, Contact your dealer, reference your invoice or you can always contact the Carousel Sales team with this inquiry.

What DSS tiers are there?

At the time of this article, the levels are in increments of 5, 15, 30, 60 and enterprise.

"I bought a DSS-30, But it says I can only connect 6 players?"

Theres a difference between a DSS and a Player License. To connect players to your system, you need player licenses (Read the KB Article on Player Licenses for more information about getting more of those). When you get a DSS-30, you're not getting 30 endpoint connections to instantly connect to your server, you're getting the server with the capacity to hold 30 player licenses.

How can I expand my "DSS" level?

If you have your DSS level maxed out and want to go beyond that, you can upgrade your servers DSS level to the next tier. We subtract the cost of your existing DSS level to pro-rate the amount so you're never paying "extra" in the future to expand.

For example if you have 15 players, and you want to add more, You'll have to upgrade your DSS 15 to a DSS-30.

DSS levels and hardware limitiations

Certain pieces of first-party hardware (TRMS provided servers) have a limit to the number of player connections they can support. This is not a limit imposed by us, but more-so a limit based off the specs of the hardware.

  • The 200 series of servers can support a max of DSS-15
  • The 300 series of servers can support a max of DSS-15
  • The 400 series of servers can support a DSS-Enterprise (But we recommend not exceeding 300 players)

Of course, when you're running your Carousel server on a Virtual Machine, depending on your server specs will determine the highest recommend DSS you can run.

TL;DR

The DSS Level tells the server how many max player endpoints its allowed to serve.
