Carousel 7.0 Upgrade Guide

Applies to

  • Systems running legacy versions of Carousel (< 7.0.0)
  • Systems running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher
  • That intend to upgrade to Carousel version 7.0.x

Before We Begin

First, we would just like to say thanks for purchasing a Carousel Digital Signage system from Tightrope Media Systems. We are constantly improving and refining Carousel to make it a better experience for all our users, both current and future.

Please read the entire set of instructions before beginning the update. If you are unsure about how to perform any of the steps, contact Tightrope Support for clarification before beginning the update process.

What Does This Guide Cover?

This guide covers updating the FrontDoor and Carousel software on a Carousel Server, as well as updating the Carousel software on a Carousel Player.

What Do I Need?

‚ÄĘ Software Download Key for updates.trms.com. This can be obtained by emailing support@trms.com with the following info:

    • Your name
    • Your organization’s name
    • Your current FrontDoor version number ‚Äď Your current Carousel version number

‚ÄĘ Access to the Carousel Server and all Carousel Players. This can be either:

    • Physical: Plugging a keyboard and mouse into each unit to control it.
    • Virtual: Using a remote connection program1 such as VNC or TeamViewer.

Installation

Important Note for Users who have Previously Installed Carousel Updates

Carousel version 7.0 dramatically simplifies the installation process.  You no longer need to worry about which installer applications need to be run on each machine.  We hope that this makes the upgrade much easier.

Machine Roles

There are two roles that make up a Carousel System. Each machine will perform one or both of these roles.

 

Server: This role provides the centralized administration for your Carousel system.  This role includes the FrontDoor application, Carousel database, Carousel media storage and the Carousel web user interface.  This role will only be installed on one of your machines.

 

Player: This is a unit acting as a Carousel Player to show content on a screen.  It will communicate with a a Server (possibly on the same computer) in order to retrieve the content that should be shown.

Upgrade Compatibility

The Carousel 7 installer application will automatically upgrade the following versions of the software.

  • Carousel 6.4.x
  • Carousel 6.5.x
  • Carousel 6.6.x

If you are upgrading from a version of Carousel that is older than 5.2.0, please contact TRMS support for assistance.

From the Windows Desktop of the Carousel Server

  1. Use a web browser to navigate to http://updates.trms.com.  
  2. Enter the download key provided by TRMS support.
  3. Download the Carousel installer application.
  4. Double-click the Carousel installer application.  The Carousel Installer loads:
  5. Click Continue to select the roles that should be installed:
  6. Ensure that Server is selected.
  7. If this machine will also act as a Player, ensure that Player is selected
  8. Click Install.  The installation process will begin and the progress will be displayed:
  9. Once the installer finishes, use a web browser to log in to the Carousel web application to ensure that everything is operating as expected.

From the Desktop of connected Windows Players

  1. Download the Carousel installer application from http://updates.trms.com as you did before (it's the same installer as we used on the Server), or login to your Carousel site and navigate to Configure : Players : Downloads to download it.
  2. Double-click the Carousel installer application
  3. Ensure that Player is selected
  4. Click Install
  5. Once the installer finishes, launch the Carousel Player software using the Desktop shortcut.
Note on BrightSign Player Updates

Starting in Carousel version 7, the Carousel for BrightSign software is bundled into the Carousel product.  There is no longer a separate installation procedure.  After updating the Server, any connected BrightSign players will automatically download the latest player software and perform the update.
