Cablecast attempts to read AFD data from unsupported files

Symptoms

  • After adding an invalid or unsupported file to the server, you may see dropped frames on the output.

Cause

Cablecast's file validation routine is a multi-part process.  We first obtain general information about the file, such as it's codec, frame dimensions and audio sample rate.  We then use this data to determine if we should continue the validation process, or if we should flag the file as invalid.

The routine used since Cablecast 5.3.0 includes obtaining the AFD data from the file as part of this initial information request.  Since the AFD data is stored in the actual video frames, we have to decode the video in order to provide the AFD data.  Thus, for unsupported files the system attempts to decode a file that we know to be unsupported.

Workaround

  1. Remove the file from the server
  2. -or- transcode the file to a supported codec

Additional Information

This behavior will be changed in an upcoming maintenance release. The updated routine only attempts to obtain AFD data from files that otherwise pass validation.

PendingThis software behavior has been identified as bug and will be fixed.  It has been assigned case number 8796.

Fixed This bug has been fixed internally as is awaiting release.

Released A fix for this bug has been released in Cablecast 5.3.6, on June 5 2015.
